The other day I walked into a bookstore, looking for a new & inspiring read.
Specifically, a riveting, can’t put down, don't want to do anything else kind of book.
And well, if it inspired some sort of personal growth, EVEN BETTER!
In the bookstore, I scanned the shelf for something that I stood out. Obviously the bright orange book with The F-Bomb smack dab on the cover did just that.
“The Subtle Art of Not Giving F*CK: A Counterintuitive Approach To Living A Good Life"
When I read the cover, I laughed to myself and said “what a great title… but I’m good in the department”
Why? Well as a Life Coach and Creator of The KICK-ASS Stepmom Project, I teach Stepmoms the importance of not allowing things that are outside of your control to affect the way you go about your life.
I'm all about being the expert on your own life, and not wasting time and energy on things that at the end of the day, just don't matter.
It's a mentality I help others to achieve, and one that I embrace myself.
While this attitude normally guides me in the right direction, it almost led me to leave this book on the shelf. ALMOST!
Instead, something stopped me. I picked it up and headed for the cash.
Thank goodness I did!
A while back I posted something on my Facebook Page that said:
“The moment that you stop caring about what other people think,
is the moment that you truly start living your life”
Someone commented on the post …”No no, you must care what people think... it's so important to consider the feelings of those around you"
I think the point that I was trying to make got lost.
I wasn't encouraging my readers to disregard other people's feelings and walk around like an insensitive BEEP. I was talking about not allowing other people's opinions to dictate how you go about your life.
I was also talking about, the whole "don't sweat the small stuff" mentality!
In the post "Hey There 2017. It's Time To Declutter" I said that the moment I started to view my time and attention as a valuable and limited resource, everything changed for me (not just in my Stepmom Life either)
My time, attention, and the things that I give a beep about …. are limited.
Over the past year, I’ve spent A LOT of time thinking about the people and things I dedicate my energy to.
It's provided me with much clarity and is an exercise I highly recommend.
In fact, it's been game changing.
But reading this book has made me realize that this is a process, not a destination.
Even though I make a point to now allow:
- things that are outside of my control
- what other people think
- other people's goals + definition of success
to control my thoughts, sometime they creep in and HIJACK what I know to be true!
This book has taught me that even though I have come a long way, I still have a long way to go!
This book doesn't encourage you to not give a beep about ANYTHING.... it shows you how to direct your time and energy towards the things that are worth giving a beep about.
Look, I have two things I want to say in this post!
1. Once you get clear about the things in life you're going to give a beep about, you become more confident and feel more in control of your life.
2. Go buy this book... If you can handle a few f-bombs, it will be a complete game changer!
(I'm serious... click HERE and go buy it now. It just happens to be one of those riveting, can’t put down, don't want to do anything else kind of reads.)
You can thank me later
