It's the first week of April and spring is in the air! Well, actually, it's still absolutely freezing here in Southwestern Ontario, but we're close!

The days are getting longer, I can hear the birds chirping in the morning and I have this uncontrollable urge to get this place organized! Closets, cupboards, cars you name it! I'm on a mission to PURGE ... and then shop! Kind of an "out with the old, in with the new" mentality! 

I don't know about you, but clutter makes me feel a bit anxious. Actually, it makes me straight up irritable. 

I truly love a clean house - and I'm pretty good at keeping it that way. On the outside that is.

But the truth is, behind-the-scenes, the drawers and cupboards in this place are a complete gongshow. 

With four kids, around here stuff accumulates FAST! Drawers become dumping grounds and crap gets shoved places where it shouldn't... all so that we can keep the house "tidy".

Yes, it's a tad unproductive, but with a hectic schedule,  when you're in a pinch, sometimes shoving it in a closet is the only option! (That's what what I keep telling myself at least) 

However, after a few years of this nasty habit you get closets that look like this!!

I'm not gong to lie I was a little squeamish about showing this hoarding station to the world wide web - but while we're being honest, it's not the only closet that looks like this in our house. 

Funny thing is, I used to judge people for this kind of mess... and now here I am, showing the chaos to the world! 

This weekend, I started on Reese's room, and now I'm making my way though the house PURGING & ORGANIZING like a bit of a crazy person! 

I've decided to take on a less is more approach in life - while I highly doubt I'll ever be able to embrace the minimalist attitude, for the sake of all things organized, it's time to cut back on all the stuff!  

I dreaded this job for months, but I'm actually starting it enjoy the whole process. Maybe it's become I'm making some good money selling stuff we no longer need online or maybe it's because I've had some XOXO Pinot-Grigio Chardonnay in tow to make the whole process a little more fun. Either way, I'm really starting to love my "Out with the old, in with the new theme" this Spring!

Here's what I'm doing to purge, and make money in the process!

1. I'm keeping it real

When I'm going through our stuff I ask myself:

  • Have we used this in the last year?
  • Do I see us using it in the next 6 months

    If the answer is no - then it's outta here!! No exceptions!! 

2. I'm selling the good stuff

I've always been about buying good quality stuff for the kids. I find it lasts longer, looks better and at the end of the day it ends up costing less, because I can sell it!!

Not to mention, I try to be conscious about how much stuff we send to the landfill. I'm constantly questioning how much I throw in the garbage, so I try and purchase stuff that can be re-used over and over again. 

For all of those reasons, I huge fan of selling stuff on Kijiji and Buy & Sell Groups on Facebook. Yes it takes time, but straight up this weekend I made more than $300 selling clothes that no longer fit Reese - now I have the funds for her Spring & Summer Wardrobe.... that I PROMISE will be put away in a more organized fashion! 

I'm hoping to have the same success with the older kid's clothes, so that we essentially break even on the kid's Spring wardrobe! 

3. If I don't need it, I don't want to see it! 

The stuff that we aren't going to use in the foreseeable future, but may be useful down the road is going into storage. If I don't need it, I don't want to see it.  For example, we kept most of Reese's baby stuff in hopes that someday we will be able to use it again... however instead of piling the totes in the closet like I have been, the bins have been moved into a crawl space!  

4. I've implemented a NO PILING rule

Like I said, I had a pile of totes in Reese's closet that just kept growing! Whether it be in a closet,  in the office or on the kitchen counter, once you start piling, you keep piling and avoid putting stuff where it actually goes.  I know that's true for us at least! (Mail is the worst)

Moving forward, there is a no piling rule at the Scrimgeour's... now I just have to get my husband on board. He's the piling addict!  

5. I'm taking stuff to Goodwill 

The stuff I can't sell is going straight to Goodwill - again, so many people can use the stuff that we no longer need! 

Nothing feels better than unloading a car full of stuff to donate!

I will say, after a weekend of selling, purging and organizing I am still not even close to where I want this house to be. But I already feel like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. I think starting is the hardest part! 

I've dreaded this job forever, but I'm actually really enjoying myself - probably because, like I said, I've had a glass of wine to keep me company! Whatever the reason, it's going well! 

I truly believe that your environment makes a huge different to how you feel! At the end of the day, a clean, organized house puts me in a better mood, ultimately making me a better wife, mom and stepmom. It also makes putting my feet up at with a celebratory glass of wine at the end of the day, even more gratifying!
